Regional Plan

In response to the decade-long highs and lows of the recession, the region came together to envision a better future that recognizes the critical role of our built environment in all aspects of community life. The end result was the Southern Nevada Strong (SNS) Regional Plan. Our region will thrive when we have:
Public Transportation
Reliable Transportation

Although most Southern Nevadans currently need access to a car to meet their daily transportation requirements, residents have demonstrated support for improved additional transit, including expanded bus service and potentially, light rail. Thus, we must:

  • Plan for multiple modes of transportation including an efficient road network with widely available parking, biking and transit options.
  • Plan to correspond with redevelopment areas along future transit corridors.
  • Create more reliable, safe and convenient transit options that will help transportation costs decrease.
Quality Housing for all Income Levels

The SNS vision includes new growth to stabilize and strengthen existing neighborhoods, as well as redevelop vacant and underused sites. Thus, we must:

  • Plan for jobs, services, and schools to be located in relative proximity to a variety of housing types for all budgets and preferences.
  • Plan for the region’s downtown areas to provide a variety of jobs, housing and related amenities.
  • Identify strategies to develop downtown services, including dense housing combined with vibrant commercial spaces for growth in these urban areas.
Quality Housing
UNLV
High-Quality Educational Systems for Youth & the Workforce

High-quality public education leads to a variety of well-paying jobs. Thus, we must:

  • Make high-quality investments in education to boost the region’s long-term economic competitiveness.
  • Prioritize school environment for children, encouraging development that better supports existing schools.
  • Encourage local businesses to support education and school programs, better connecting opportunities for student career mapping, mentoring, and educational needs of employers.
Strong Social Service Networks & High-Quality Health Care

The uncoordinated growth and disjointed land-use patterns have made it more difficult and time-consuming to access necessary services and amenities. Thus, we must:

  • Focus on new and existing expansion that supports a diversity of lifestyles, making it easier to get to work, school, health care facilities, and other destinations.
  • Foster complete communities by integrating place-making and allow diverse populations to be supported by a variety of economic opportunities and healthy options, regardless of income level.
  • Support access to healthcare facilities, access to nutritious foods, parks and other recreational areas, and many more desirable community services.
Health Care

Through better integration of quality housing, transportation, education, workforce and social service networks, we can achieve a stronger Southern Nevada. Watch this video to learn more.
