Sub-Objectives
3.2.1

To advance the priorities of Food Security in Nevada, Nevada's Plan for Action, support in-depth research on existing or emerging geographic concentrations of food insecure populations within Clark County.

    Three Square publishes annual food insecurity map; Food deserts in Henderson identified in its Local Foods, Local Places planning; City of Henderson's Invest Health grant also addressed food insecurity in Pittman neighborhood
3.2.2

Support and coordinate with organizations working to increase access to healthy food options, including Southern Nevada Health District, including Southern Nevada Health District, Southern Nevada Food Council and the School of Community Health Sciences at UNLV, to identify underserved areas that could support healthy food outlets, urban agriculture, community gardens and farmer's markets.

Promote healthy food options and ensure Supplemental Nutritional Program (SNAP) benefits are available in areas with concentrations of fast food outlets that also have high food insecurity rates.

  • Mid 2017 Update
    No farmers markets in the state of Nevada accepted SNAP until November 2011— Currently, 6 of the 11 farmers markets accept SNAP and 3 more will later this year; Veggie Buck Truck (Vegas Roots' "pop up" produce truck) sells fresh produce in areas with senior centers and around welfare offices; University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) facilitates EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program) and SNAP-Ed programs to provide nutrition education in low-income neighborhoods; Other SNAP-Ed implementing agencies include HELP of Southern Nevada and Three Square Food Bank; Together We Can awarded $500k USDA Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive (FINI) grant to provide a nutrition incentive match for SNAP benefits redeemed at farmers markets and corner stores, which will help promote/increase healthy food access
