Notes from the Field: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada
WHO: Molly Latham, Executive Director, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada
WHAT: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada works to connect at risk youth to adult mentors to provide positive adult influences during important developmental years. They recruit volunteers from across the valley to work with youths in high-risk neighborhoods, foster care, and other service systems.
WHY: The Southern Nevada Strong (SNS) regional plan identifies mentorship and informal education as a strategy to improve student achievement. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada plays an important role in this priority. Molly met with SNS staff to discuss the federal grants initiative SNS helped facilitate. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada is interested in the possibility of expanding their program portfolio and see federal grants as a potential way to do so.
NEXT: SNS staff shared the draft federal grants strategy documents and plans for next steps once the strategy is completed with Molly. SNS will continue to share open funding opportunities and trainings opportunities with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada. Since mentorship is a priority within the regional plan, SNS staff plans to gather relevant community partners and funders to discuss the expansion of mentorship programs.
“Notes From the Field” is a real-time blog written by our SNS manager that shares notes from meetings with community partners and stakeholders on how they contribute to the progress of the plan. This is an opportunity to follow along on the valley’s progress and receive relevant news on housing, transportation, healthcare, and employment projects.
